OCR: PERSPECTIVES AND PROJECTS The Mars One project DEIMOS PROJECT MARS ONE PROJECT The Mars One was designed by the Jet Planetary Society. It was presented in 1984 and scheduled for flight between 2000 and 2015. The Mars One is a spacecraft with three modules 60 meters in length and weighing 3000 tons that would be assembled in Earth orbit. Assembly would be achieved via some 20 space shuttle flights from a space station built by Harris. The whole would form a three- branched star and tum slowly on itself to create artificial gravity. The Mars One propulsion system would differ from that of the NERVA and Deimos projects. Using ionic motors, the craft could attain speeds ten times those obtained with chemical fuel. So the craft could enter Mars orbit in much shorter time. Mars One would jettison two descent modules of the Deimos MEM type. Exploration of the Martian surface would last several months. After returning to Earth orbit, the craft would dock with a space shuttle, the crew and Mars samples would then be loaded aboard for reentry into Earth's atmosphere. The cost of this project is estimated at $38 billion. MARS BETAT
